Broken Bones ~ Emma's Story
This is RATL Emma around 6 months old or so, she broke her leg pretty bad in a wheel accident. At the time the wheel I had I thought was a good one; good for breaking bones and not safe at all, turns out.
We tried to restrain Emma for the xray using shielded gloves. Due to her injury the gloves were too cumbersome and she was too wily to hang on to, especially with an open fracture; it is not cool to have human hands in an xray like this but for the sake of study it is here. Dr. Scott of Riversbend Animal Clinic used dental tools to take the sharp point off the protruding bone and then glued the hole shut. About 5 months later Emma didn't even limp from the injury. The rodent ability to adapt is uncanny!
About 11 months after the accident Emma was euthanized due to a sudden severe case of head tilt that did not respond to treatment attempts. Here is her post-mortem xray.
I just had to know how that leg came back together after such a bad break.
I'm no Radiologist but this looks pretty amazing to me. The bones grew together to make the leg work for Emma but not like before the break. The tiny bone in the back (fibula) is really big compared to the unbroken one.
